T.R.U.E. Cards . . . Life Lessons

Offers character-building lessons

Heartwood Institute

Heartwood Institute promotes understanding and the practice of seven universal attributes: Courage, Loyalty, Justice, Respect, Hope, Honesty, and Love.

Heartwood believes these attributes constitute the foundations of community among all people. Institute provides character education curriculum and ethics education resources for children, schools and families.

Through program materials that explore the ethical content of stories, Heartwood helps children to:

  • Develop a basic moral framework
  • Live by it
  • Appreciate its value

To support character and self-esteem building, Highmark Foundation and its Highmark Healthy High 5 initiative, Heartwood Institute condensed the essence of its full curriculum into T.R.U.E. Cards … Life Lessons to build positive self-esteem in children. T.R.U.E. Cards … Life Lessons wtwo children on a swingas developed for teachers, parents and counselors who work with children. Each card features a universal character attribute and highlights how to apply those universal values in the everyday life of a child: i.e. persistence is a type of courage.

T.R.U.E. Cards serve as an important tool for school and for home-based efforts to instill an important component of positive self-esteem and respectful behavior — good character. Each card features proverbs, sayings or quotations gleaned from literature. These powerful words have survived for generations and have stood the test of time. They were carefully compiled into T.R.U.E. Cards to help children put Courage, Loyalty, Justice, Respect, Hope, Honesty and Love into action by building relationships, resolving conflicts, setting and working toward goals, assuming personal responsibility and contributing to their communities — all components of resiliency and healthy self-esteem — the basis for effective, healthy behaviors.

T.R.U.E. Cards can be successfully coordinated with behavior specific programs such as nutrition, exercise, bullying prevention and grief counseling. Heartwood Institute students learn to feel good about themselves, to live up to shared human values, to gain personal integrity and purpose, and to connect with others.
