Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grant program enables Pennsylvania schools to implement or enhance healthy lifestyle programs for students

Grants support physical activity, nutrition, self-esteem and bullying prevention programs

The Highmark Foundation, through the Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grant program, recently awarded $921,522 to support physical activity, nutrition, self-esteem and bullying prevention programs in 130 Pennsylvania schools. The grants are awarded to provide schools with the resources to implement or enhance unique and creative programs that will help improve the overall health and well-being of students.

"Every school has a wellness policy and plan, some even have programs already in place," said Yvonne Cook, president of the Highmark Foundation. "Through the Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge, schools can use these grants to implant or execute the programs in their schools to their highest potential."

The Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grant program invites schools to apply for grants of up to $10,000 for programs that address bullying prevention and self-esteem, improve nutrition education, enhance nutrition choices and provide opportunities for physical education. Each school is eligible to receive one grant per year and grants are awarded on a rolling basis. As of October, some 293 elementary, middle and high schools have received $2.2 million through the program.

The following schools received Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grants during July through September of 2008. For more information on the specific program supported at each school, visit www.highmarkhealthyhigh5.org and click on "Schools" to find the link to our 2008 School Challenge Grant awards. PDF

About Highmark Healthy High 5

Highmark Healthy High 5 is a five-year, $100 million children's health promotion initiative of the Highmark Foundation. The mission of the initiative is to improve the health of children and adolescents ages 6-18 by providing them with the tools and practices needed to make informed decisions about living healthier lives. Highmark Healthy High 5 addresses five critical children's health promotion issues — nutrition, physical activity, self-esteem, grieving, and bullying prevention — by raising awareness, changing behavior through grants and programs, and providing resources to parents, schools and communities served by the Highmark Foundation.
