Bullying

Highmark Healthy High 5 Bullying Prevention Poster Contest

Highmark Healthy High 5 and its four regional television media partners have raised the awareness of bullying prevention in schools through the Highmark Healthy High 5 Bullying Prevention Poster Contest.

Early in 2008, students in grades 5-8 created wonderful original posters with the theme "Bullying Isn't Cool." Finalists in each region — Pittsburgh, Erie, Johnstown/Altoona/State College and Harrisburg — were chosen and shown on our television media partners' station Web sites, where people cast votes for their favorite bullying prevention poster. Contest rules varied slightly by region.

One poster from each region was chosen for the grand prize — an iPod for the winning student and a $2,500 Highmark Healthy High 5 grant for his or her school. More information and images of the finalist posters may be available on our media partner Web sites.

Here are the Highmark Healthy High 5 Bullying Prevention Poster Contest winners.

Mark Malecky
Butler Middle School
Butler, PA
KDKA TV, Pittsburgh
Mark Malecky is an 8th grader who depicted "Bullying Isn’t Cool" with a circle and a slash and then included facts about bullying. His advice about bullying — just treat people with respect and you'll get it back. The Butler Middle School auditorium was filled as Mark's classmates cheered. The Pittsburgh area's contest had more than 200 entries that together received more than 6,800 online votes. See the award presentation on Pittsburgh's KDKA TV2.

Kushtrim Loshaj
Wilson Middle School
Erie, PA
WICU12, Erie
Kushtrim Loshaj received 938 votes from the 3,834 who voted in this area. He was encouraged to draw this poster by the bullying prevention coordinator, Mr. Ray Smith. Bullying prevention bulletin boards line the hallways of Wilson Middle School as Kushtrim Loshaj's 8th-grade classmates enthusiastically applauded as he received his iPod grand prize. The $2,500 grant will be used to further the Wilson Middle School's bullying prevention program.

Spencer E. Witmer
Big Spring Middle School
School
Newville, PA
WHTM abc27, Harrisburg
The Bullying Isn't Cool Poster Contest wasn't the first that Spencer Witmer has entered. He enjoys drawing and has won contests in the past. But this contest intrigued him because of the messages that it could share. And his message was a winner.

Jason Mobley
Spring Cove Middle School
Roaring Spring, PA
WTAJ, Altoona/Johnstown/State College
Jason Mobley snapped this moving photograph after directing his classmates to demonstrate someone who has been bullied. How was he inspired to create this scene? Jason says, "It's what I see in school . . . and what I've felt when I've been bullied." Jason Mobley is a victim of bullying. He knows better than anyone that "Bullying Isn't Cool."
