Grant Process
Overview
The Highmark Foundation supports evidence-based initiatives and programs aligned with our mission to improve the health, well-being and quality of life of individuals who reside in the Pennsylvania communities served by Highmark Inc.
We are especially interested in the health and well-being of our children, and we have created a five-year, $100 million children's health promotion initiative Highmark Healthy High 5. The goal is to promote lifelong healthy behaviors in children and adolescents to help them grow physically, mentally and emotionally.
To help achieve this goal, Highmark Healthy High 5 provides program grants to nonprofit organizations and School Challenge grants to schools.

5 Focus Areas
As part of the Highmark Foundation's commitment, we focus on providing support for evidence-based programs that address children's health promotion (ages 6-18) through the key areas of Highmark Healthy High 5.
Where possible, we look to support evidence-based programs that affect the communities that are served by Highmark and work collaboratively with nonprofit organizations and schools to leverage additional funding to support successful projects that can be replicated.
Highmark Healthy High 5 awards grants in the following areas:
- Nutrition Includes support of programs that work directly with children and adolescents to promote nutrition and healthy eating habits through behavior-focused strategies.
- Physical Activity Includes support of programs that work directly with children and adolescents to promote increased physical activity through behavior-focused strategies.
- Self-esteem Includes support of programs that enhance children and adolescents' overall judgment of themselves, specifically their self-confidence and self-worth. The Highmark Foundation will only fund programs that have a specific self-esteem curriculum and an ability to show positive measurable outcomes.
- Bullying Prevention Includes support of programs that create awareness and provide education about bullying.
- Grieving (Nonprofits Only) Includes support of programs that directly assist grieving children and adolescents through education and support groups.
